About

The Photon Factory is a multiuser facility which delivers short (nanosecond) and ultrashort  (35/100 femtosecond) light pulses to its users. As part of the Dan Walls Center for Pure and Applied Optics, we work closely with the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Physics, the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, and the University of Auckland’s Microfabrication Facility. We also have strong cross university colaborations through the Dodd-Walls Centre for Quantum Science and Technology. Our research employs  high energy laser pulses to evaluate the femtosecond dynamics of molecular systems – watching chemical reactions on their own time scales.  We also facilitate the development of novel photonic technologies, explore the behaviour of biomaterials and biomimetic systems, and  fabricate  micron-scale devices and architectures.
